Indie developer By Yeo has commented on the upcoming Nintendo Switch release and Chinese localizations for their latest offering. Yeo (@shin_yeo on X.com) is a Russian developer who has previously released “The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa” and “Arrest of a Stone Buddha.”
Fading Afternoon is a side scroller beat ’em up genre game. It was released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on September 15, 2023. In this game, you play as Seiji Maruyama, a middle-aged yakuza recently released from prison. Known as “Gozuki” (one of the demon generals from Buddhist mythology), he is the power that his oyabun counts on. However, Maruyama is getting old, which is a factor his aniki is not taking into account.
The game features multi-endings, complex beat’em up action, mini-games, and a city to explore. It also contains mature content, including alcohol abuse, smoking, scenes of graphic violence, and suicides. The game has been described as a melancholic journey following a Yakuza man who is no stranger to adversity. He has partaken in countless scraps with rival gangs but is about to face the biggest battle of his life that he is preordained to lose: a fatal illness.
The Chinese version is awaiting approval, while the Nintendo Switch version has been stated to be arriving “soon.” The Switch version will offer exclusive features as well:
For fans of Yeo’s older work, “The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa,” there may potentially be some movement on adapting the story to a proper manga. Yeo recently expressed an interest in finding an artist for an adaptation:
You can play “Fading Afternoon” and other games by Yeo on Steam right now.
