Tohoku Shinsha Co., Ltd. announced the launch of a special project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “Space Battleship Yamato” anime TV broadcast. The company has also opened an official X account.

The company also announced that Hideaki Anno will be involved in the planning and production of the project, which will include several book projects, a commemorative screening event of the TV series, and an exhibition of related materials.

Space Battleship Yamato” is an animated television series that began airing in 1974. It became a social phenomenon through reruns and is known as the work that laid the foundation for science fiction animation.

The story takes place in the year 2199. The Earth is on the verge of destruction under attack from the mysterious interstellar nation Gamilas. While the Earth Defense Forces are defeated, a message arrives from Starsha, the queen of the planet Iscandar. She says that Iscandar has a radiation removal device, Cosmo Cleaner D, which can save the earth from extinction. The “Space Battleship Yamato,” equipped with Iscandar’s “Wave Motion Engine” technology, travels 148,000 light-years away, carrying the dreams and hopes of mankind.

It has been announced that Hideaki Anno, animation director and filmmaker known for “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Shin Kamen Rider,” will be involved in this 50th anniversary project. This is according to Hideaki Anno’s offer.

The company is planning several book projects, a commemorative screening event for the TV series, and an exhibition of related materials. The announced plans are as follows:

The “Space Battleship Yamato” TV series commemorative screening event is scheduled for October 6, 2024 (Sunday).
Space Battleship Yamato Exhibition” (tentative name) to tour various locations in Japan is being planned.
