Outlaw Star is a classic 1998 anime from Sunrise that provides a clever backdrop for a stylish ensemble cast in an adventurous and at times comical romp through space.

Gene Starwind and his sidekick Jim Hawking find themselves in control of an experimental ship known as the Outlaw Star, and with it and a mysterious young woman named Melfina, they’ll face down a whole slew of pirates and mercenaries to uncover the secret of the galactic leyline. This series may have some pacing issues but it’s short length and trademark Sunrise atmosphere make it an enjoyable watch even if you skip a couple side episodes.
The real heart of the show is in the setting and the ensemble. The main cast is well balanced to provide both gripping action sequences and taught dramatic moments along with some genuine comedic relief.

If you’re into a gun-slinging space western setting with a little bit of magic and mind bending mixed in, this should be right up your alley. There are a lot of fun moments in the series and it really pays off well by the final episodes by delivering actual resolution for the characters. There were some plans at some point to produce a sequel in the form of one long OVA called “Sword of Wind” but it never worked out.
Still, this old ship has never looked so good now that its out on blu-ray — Don’t pass up a ride on the Outlaw Star.
